Choosing Between Micro SD Memory Suppliers

 

Micro SD memory—also called a microSD card—is a widely used and widely available kind of flash memory. However, just because these cards are easy to find doesn’t mean that it is easy to get a quality product. Not all micro SD memory suppliers are created equal, and choosing the wrong supplier may mean that you end up with cards that are subpar and not up to the tasks you need them to perform. There are several things to keep in mind when choosing a microSD card supplier. As you evaluate your options, consider these criteria.

 

microSD Compatibility

Although microSD cards are all the same size and will all fit easily into microSD card slots, they won’t all work in every one of those slots. That is because there are multiple microSD formats, including SD, SDXC, SDHC, and the new SDUC, which will soon be on the market. Each microSD card is built to fit specifications set by the Secure Digital Association, but they are not all built with the same standards. The microSD card that works for your application will depend on the card slot used in the hardware. microSD cards are not designed to be backward compatible, so you cannot take older hardware and put a new card in it. Not all suppliers make all kinds of cards, so be sure that the one you choose makes microSD cards that are compatible with your device.

 

microSD Grade

The grade of the microSD card you choose is of the utmost importance. This is especially true if you are selecting memory for an industrial application. Industrial grade microSD cards are designed with SLC flash memory. SLC, or single-level cell, flash memory is the highest possible grade and is designed to store one bit of data per cell. This allows for the greatest level of data security as well as the fastest read and write operations. If you choose a supplier with industrial microSD cards, be sure that they also offer a locked BOM, or bill of materials. With a locked BOM, no components of the microSD card will be changed without the product number being discontinued. This ensures that you won’t have to worry about unexpected failures due to parts changes.

 

microSD Capacity

What is the storage capacity you need from a microSD card? Not all micro SD memory suppliers offer a range of capacities, especially across different formats. Don’t skimp on the storage you need. Instead, find a supplier who can offer exactly what you need for your application.
