What Is Solid State Flash Storage?

Solid state flash storage is a version of data storage used in SSDs. SSD stands for solid state drive, and is a drive format that is a popular alternative to HDDs, or hard disk drives. Flash storage was named for its incredible speeds—it performs operations in a flash. Solid state flash stores data on memory cells that can be accessed quickly and easily. Flash storage is a non-volatile form of memory.

Many types of storage, such as RAM storage, involve volatile memory. Volatile memory requires power in order to maintain the data integrity. Flash is a non-volatile form of memory. This advantage resolves the issue of data loss due to power failures, and makes flash memory extremely attractive to industrial users. The solid state distinction means that there are no moving parts in a solid state drive. This is a difference from HDDs, which have large, spinning disks that must rotate to record and read data. This mechanical component of HDDs makes them more prone to failure, since a problem can easily arise as the disk is spinning. This also makes HDDs less reliable in environments in which shock and vibration are common and increase the odds of a disk-related malfunction.

 

Solid state flash storage has several advantages.

Flash storage is much faster than other forms of memory, thanks to the lack of moving parts. It also has higher levels of data security and is able to operate in extreme conditions without loss of performance. Solid state flash storage can also be extremely small, so it’s ideal for devices with a limited amount of space.
