What Are SLC SSDs?
When you’re looking for rugged storage for an industrial application, SLC SSDs are likely to be among your top candidates. SLC SSDs offer the right mix of reliability, compatibility, and capacity to work seamlessly in a range of industrial applications. Here is what engineers and OEMs need to know about SLC SSDs.
SLC Explained
SLC stands for single-level cell. It describes a form of NAND Flash storage in which one bit of data is stored per cell. Restricting data storage to one bit provides more reliability, since it limits the impact of any issue that arises within a cell and limits the window of time in which a power failure or other problem can interrupt the write cycle for data storage. SLC is used in industrial applications for critical data storage for this reason. Although it is more expensive than the multi-level cell, or MLC, NAND Flash storage that is found in commercial products, SLC provides the level of reliability necessary for aerospace, embedded computing, transportation, and other industries with sensitive data needs.
SSDs vs. HDDs
Solid state drives, or SSDs, are often a better choice for industrial applications that currently have hard disk drives, or HDDs, as embedded hosts. SSDs are able to withstand mechanical shock and vibrations better than HDDs, and they use less power and create less noise. SSDs are available in a range of densities, so they can be adapted to a variety of storage needs.
SLC SSDs for Industrial Applications
SLC SSDs offer the highest level of reliability and durability for storage needs in industrial applications. They can operate in environments with extreme temperatures, wide temperature swings, and mechanical pressures without compromising critical data. They can also be easily customized for a range of storage needs and budgets and to be compatible with any host-specific parameters necessary for your project. In addition, SLC SSDs are available in different sizes for projects in which space is an issue.
