Understanding Embedded Flash Technology

Controls and Automation Application- Delkin Devices

Flash technology is a popular form of memory for many applications, including small, portable devices used for consumer or industrial purposes. Embedded flash technology refers to embedded memory that is installed in a device and that is designed using flash technology. Some embedded flash memory options are non-removable, while other options may be in the form of removable memory cards. Embedded flash is available in a variety of capacities and specifications. As a result, it can be used in a wide array of devices. For industrial applications, choosing the appropriate grade of embedded flash technology is an important part of selecting an effective memory solution.

Embedded Flash Technology Grades

There are three popular grades of flash technology: TLC, MLC, and SLC. The main differentiator between the three technologies is the amount of data that is stored on each cell within the memory device.

With TLC flash, three or more bits of data are stored per cell. This kind of flash is generally used in consumer devices, such as cellphones. It is slower than other forms of flash and has a shorter lifespan, but it is appropriate for consumer grade devices.

With MLC flash, two bits of data are stored on each cell. This kind of flash can be found in both commercial and industrial applications. MLC flash is more reliable, faster, and has a longer lifespan than TLC flash.

SLC flash is considered to be industrial grade flash. One bit of data is stored on each cell with this kind of flash memory. SLC flash offers the longest lifespan of all forms of flash memory, plus the highest level of data security and the fastest operating speeds. It also provides an extended temperature range, which is necessary for many industrial applications.

Uses for Industrial Embedded Flash Technology

In the industrial market, embedded flash is widely used across many industries. Flash memory is found in devices that are used in healthcare, gaming, automation, transportation, signage, and much more. In each of these cases, industrial grade embedded flash is used in order to accommodate rugged operating conditions, such as extreme temperatures, shock, and vibration.

In some cases, industrial users choose MLC flash for their devices. Typically, this occurs in response to the need for increased storage capacities. Some MLC flash technology is designed to adhere to industrial specifications regarding temperature, which lets industrial users get the capacity they need without sacrificing reliability.
