Is Industrial USB the Right Storage Solution for Your Application?

Industrial USB - Delkin Devices

USB flash drives are one of the most common and well-recognized storage devices available. In fact, so many people are accustomed to seeing and using USBs that they don’t consider their viability for industrial applications. However, industrial USB solutions are available, and they provide a user-friendly, portable option for storage in high-pressure environments. They are an ideal solution for OEM designs in a variety of industries. Is this the right storage for your application’s needs?

When to Choose Industrial USB Storage

Most people envision USB devices as being ideal for storing small amounts of data for limited use. This doesn’t seem compatible with industrial needs, but in reality, the USBs people picture when they think of those devices are designed for consumer use. Consumer and commercial USBs are perfectly acceptable for the specific tasks that they are designed to perform. These devices have limited lifespans and ruggedness, so for industrial users, they are usually only relevant when there is a specific set of data that needs to be uploaded just one time.

Industrial USBs offer the same convenience and easy functionality of consumer USBs, but they are designed to operate in rugged environments, making them suitable for the demands of industrial users. These are some of the instances in which an industrial USB and industrial embedded USB are an appropriate choice:

  • The application will be subjected to high levels of vibration.
  • The application will be subjected to high levels of shock.
  • The USB will be continually written with data logging files.
  • The device may be hit or jarred.
  • The storage must have a long life cycle.
  • The USB will carry critical data from one location to another.
  • The application will operate in environments with extreme temperatures.

If any of these circumstances is a possibility, then using an industrial USB is the best way to ensure the safety and security of your data.

Features of Industrial USB Storage

Industrial USB flash drives are available in capacities ranging from 128MB to 32GB. They can operate in temperatures ranging from -40 degrees C to 85 degrees C and be stored in temperatures as low as -50 degrees C. With single-level cell (SLC) flash, industrial USBs deliver 234 TBW and sequential read and write speeds of up to 32MB/s and 30MB/s, respectively. Advanced wear leveling and ECC are included, and a vast number of customization options are available.
