Industrial CF Cards in Thermostats for Food Grade Freezers

Food grade freezers have to meet high safety standards to ensure that the foods they hold are consistently kept at the appropriate temperature. This is dependent on a properly functioning digital thermostat that retains accurate temperature data using an industrial Flash storage device. Any kind of failure of a food grade freezer can have serious implications, from the economic burden of losing food that has spoiled to the potential for triggering cases of food poisoning in food that has thawed and refrozen without anyone realizing the error.

One way that food grade freezers, especially industrial freezers, monitor performance is via memory cards in thermostats within the freezer. CF, or CompactFlash cards, are particularly popular for this purpose. Industrial CF cards for food grade freezers can store information about the performance of the freezer, including the history of temperature readings, allowing users to verify that the appropriate temperature has been maintained at all times. The environment of a freezer is obviously demanding, thanks to the extreme temperatures, but industrial grade CF cards are capable of delivering the kind of performance needed for these environments. Here is a closer look at how industrial CF cards are used in food grade freezers.

Industrial CF Card Basics

CF cards are among the oldest flash storage devices on the market. The CompactFlash Association (CFA) introduced them in 1994, and the CFA continues to set the design specifications on which all CF card models are based.

CF cards are available for both the commercial market and the industrial market. Industrial CF cards are the standard for use in food grade freezers, thanks to their ability to withstand extreme temperatures. Industrial CF cards also feature other advantages, like a controlled BOM (bill of materials). When there is a controlled BOM, the firmware, flash, and controller will not be changed without advance notice and the chance to place a final order. There will also be no changes to these core components without a new product number being issued. A controlled BOM is important to industrial users because it prevents unexpected failures in the field because of incompatibility of parts.

Industrial CF Cards for Food Grade Freezers

The role of industrial memory is always evolving, and the use of CF cards in food grade freezers will likely continue to grow. Today, the most significant application of a CF card in a food grade freezer is within the thermostat. With an industrial CF card, the thermostat can store a record of all of the temperature readings within the freezer. With that data, users can determine if the freezer is maintaining the expected temperature and pinpoint any potential issues with the temperature as they occur. This can help users avoid the cost of lost and damaged food. It can also help users repair any issues quickly, at a point when repairs may be more affordable.

Being able to monitor the temperature of the freezer over an extended period is critical for food grade freezers used in commercial spaces, such as restaurants and cafeterias. A failure of a freezer can cost thousands of dollars due to lost food and revenue. When freezer failures are not obvious, and food thaws and refreezes before the issue is noticed, then contaminated food could be served to the public. Businesses can face lawsuits over medical costs and catastrophic negative publicity as a result. Industrial CF cards can help companies prevent these types of situations.

Industrial CF Cards and Extended Temperature Ranges

The reason that industrial CF cards are so popular for freezers is that they can withstand temperatures as low as -40 degrees C without any loss of function. This ongoing tolerance to the cold is essential for use in a food grade freezer.

There are other features that make industrial grade CF cards the right fit for freezers. They offer integrated SMART features that alert users to problems with the memory device. This allows users to replace the device before a larger failure occurs or as the device is reaching the end of its lifespan. Most industrial CF cards are designed with SLC NAND flash. SLC, or single-level cell, is a form of NAND flash in which one bit of data is stored per cell. This kind of flash is considered to be the most reliable version available, with the highest level of data integrity and longest lifespan. It also offers the fastest operations.

Some CF cards that can withstand extended temperature ranges feature MLC NAND flash. MLC stands for multi-level cell, and with this kind of NAND flash, two bits of data are stored per cell. Although it offers slightly slower operating speeds and slightly lower rates of data integrity, MLC-based CF cards are still suitable options for some users.
