This kind of storage is based on single-level cell, or SLC, flash memory. During write operations with SLC flash memory, one bit of data is stored on each cell. Other forms of flash memory store multiple bits of data per cell, which increases the risk of data loss during write operations that are interrupted and increases the time it takes for read operations to occur. SLC flash also has the longest possible lifespan of all flash memory types.

 

Who should use extended temperature SLC storage?

Extended temperature SLC storage should be used in any industrial application. Industrial applications are frequently used in mission-critical operations and store data that cannot be compromised. They also tend to be used in operating conditions that can put the storage device at risk.

 

Consider, for example, automation devices that are used in manufacturing facilities. The manufacturing environment often involves high temperatures as well as high vibration and shock levels that are beyond what other kinds of flash storage can handle reliably. Most industrial devices are used in these kinds of rugged conditions, and using a lower grade of memory that doesn’t feature extended temperature ranges can lead to failures in the field.
