What exactly is conformal coating?

Conformal coating is a thin outside layer that can be applied to electronic devices to keep their interiors safe from environmental contaminants and other outside elements that could affect the reliability of the device. There are several different kinds of materials that can be used, from acrylic to silicone and hybrid materials. The right one for your needs depends on your device and the operating conditions in which it will be used.

 

What can conformal coating keep out?

Think of it as a shell that protects the inside components of your storage device. The coating can protect the device from moisture, dirt, chemicals, and other contaminants. It can also reduce the impact of temperature extremes. For embedded storage devices, one significant advantage is that it can protect the storage from the long-term effects of exposure to high levels of humidity so that the interior circuits and components don’t become rusted or otherwise damaged.

 

Who should use conformal coating?

Nearly every storage device can benefit from conformal coating. However, it is particularly important for memory devices used in automotive applications, automation machines, and military applications, as well as any device that is going to be used in an environment with extreme temperatures.
