The Basics of Read/Write Speeds

The read/write speeds of an mSATA SSD are a key indicator of its performance and its suitability for a number of embedded applications. In general, all SSDs have faster read and write speeds compared to hard disk drives (HDDs). Engineers evaluate the read speed to determine how long it will take to load data from the mSATA SSD. The write speed indicates how long it will take to save something to the device.

 

How NAND Components Influence Read/Write Speeds

SATA SSDs and mSATA SSDs have different numbers of NAND components. The average SATA SSD in a 2.5-inch housing contains 8 to 10 NAND components. In contrast, mSATA SSDs are typically limited to 4 NAND components because of the physical space restrictions of the small form factor. The more NAND components an SSD can strip across, the greater the performance capacities. Despite the differences in NAND components, mSATA SSDs and SATA SSDs can still have the same read/write speeds if they are manufactured to be in the same speed class.

 

Ideal Sequential Read/Write Speeds

Sequential read and write speeds are disk access patterns. They refer to accessing or writing large amounts of data, measured in megabytes per second. For an mSATA SSD, an ideal sequential read speed is up to 170MB per second. An ideal sequential write speed is up to 150MB per second.
