Delkin Devices developed the Utility concept for OEM’s and embedded designers that need a cost-effective, yet controlled storage solution. In many cases, the cost of the host and the usage model does not support the use of high- endurance SLC flash, yet the application still requires an industrial-grade product, consistent performance and life cycle management.
A typical scenario might be:
“The application is a home medical device that requires a 4GB SDHC card to load the OS and log patient data. The buyer procures 4GB SDHC commercial-grade cards from an on-line retailer, which are qualified by engineering for the product release. The buyer purchases more of the same cards at a later date for production. However, upon integration, it is discovered that they are not functioning the same as the qualification units, causing a line-down situation and panic to identify a solution.″
Frequently, while commercial cards may appear to be the same, the firmware, the flash or even the controller has changed and the new solution is not compatible. Commercial-grade products are typically driven by cost, often built with TLC flash, and are subject to configuration changes at any time without notification.
That’s where Delkin Utility products are different. They utilize cost-effective MLC flash, yet are built to industrial standards. BOMs are controlled with smart part numbers, so that no changes can be made to the controller, firmware or flash without changing the part number. While commercial grade products can change very frequently, Delkin locks in the Utility configurations, typically for one year, and clearly communicates EOL dates.
