BurnAway: Hawaiian Style

The last two weeks I have become a poster child for Delkin and their BurnAway portable media CD/DVD recorder. I have shot the Triple Crown of Surf’s Pipeline Masters, the Hawaii High School Football All-Star Game, the Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau, the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Basketball Classic, and the Christmas Eve Hawaii Bowl Game and the associated pre-game week activities. Even with my Delkin 1 gig “e-film Pro Compact Flash” sometimes the images had to be handed off to others for website posting while still shooting the event, sometimes the financial stakes were too high to risk misplacing or accidentally formatting a fully shot compact flash card.

I seized the moment at the annual Canon USA surf photography welcoming party at Waimea Falls Park, when I pulled Delkin representative Scott Clark aside, told him I needed a battery unit that recorded CD’s/DVD’s while hanging from my side. “By my side” is a very important issue as an unfortunate incident happened a year ago Christmas Day at the 2003 Hawaii Bowl Game.

Kevin Fujii, a top photographer for the Houston Chronicle suffered a loss at Aloha Stadium that still embarrasses we local Oahu photographers. With all the proper locks securing his laptop, sometime during the Hawaii Bowl someone, strangely in this post 911 era, had the powerful tools to cut Kevin’s cable locks and rip off his laptop and the hundreds of stored Turtle Bay Resort images for a special Chronicle fashion feature.

Delkin’s Clark told me his company had just released the DVD/CD version of the BurnAway that would probably solve my concerns. The BurnAway did just that, but also opened the door for another opportunity. All the time I was shooting this years Hawaii Bowl Game I would use the BurnAway to burn CD’s while I was still shooting the game. My client, the University of Alabama Birmingham was so ecstatic that they left the post game press conference with a copy of all Hawaii Bowl Game images on CD, that they paid me right on the spot! Every time I talk to other Hawaii freelance photogs I hear horror stories about their getting paid several weeks or months after the agreed payment date. Thanks to BurnAway, no matter where we shoot we can say, “You want the images now? We like to get paid now.”

Shooting surf is a marathon, whether it is the 4am to 6pm marathon of shooting the Eddie Aikau from setup to teardown, or the Pipeline Masters from 8am to 4pm Shooting seven a side rugby is equally a marathon as many of you new to the sport will find this February at the 2005 Second Annual USA Los Angeles Rugby 7’s. The Delkin BurnAway is a dream come true, a must for serious sports photographers. Thank you Delkin. Life is now infinitely more manageable and free of worries with the BurnAway at my side.
